Hand Painting Kitchen Cabinet Doors in Chilwell Nottingham

Are you looking to refurbish your kitchen but have a limited budget? Hand painting kitchen cabinet doors, like the ones I did here in Chilwell Nottingham, can be a cost effective alternative to a replacement kitchen.

The existing doors received a new look as well as the handles

Add some colour and life back into your existing kitchen cabinet doors by having them hand painted. Here’s a quick check list to see if your kitchen is suitable for hand painting:

  1. The doors and draws are made from wood (Oak, Pine, Beech etc..) or they can also be made in MDF with a laminate veneer or foil wrapped coating.
  2. The construction of the doors and draws is of a stable appearance (structurally sound) not badly split or swollen!

THATS IT! If you have answered YES to the above two questions its most likely your existing kitchen can be hand painted and refurbished.

Typical example of a suitable door for a hand painted finish

This kitchen was an average size for a 3 bed suburban semi detached house, comprising solid oak door in good condition apart from it was starting to look worn and tired with an orangey tinge and a build up of grime which had contaminated the surface over the years.

There were 11 doors, several draws, 2 display cabinet doors and an open display plate rack, the client had decided to refurbish their kitchen, rather than have it ripped out and replaced. The layout still worked for what they wanted and the cabinets were still structurally sound.

The chosen colour was Manor House Grey from Farrow and Ball which was mixed into an equivalent colour. I only use specialist furniture paint which is designed to be hard wearing and very durable, perfect for hand painting kitchens.

The cornice and light pelmets were quite detailed, I also painted the insides of the glazed cabinets to match

They didn’t even have the worktops replaced but instead decided to go for a granite veneer overlay surface, this material is around 7mm thick and very lightweight so it fits over the top of your existing work surfaces. It can also be used as a panelled splash back on your walls and I must say I found it to be most impressive!

I often replace knobs for handles or vice versa when painting kitchens, I can make good the existing holes in the doors and draws and re-drill to fit new. However the client just couldn’t find any they liked, so I refurbished the original ones by soaking them over night an a highly effective degreasing detergent which removes the remains of the existing paint. I then repainted the centres in a black satin metal paint, which gave them a whole new look to compliment the Manor House Grey and speckled quartz work surfaces.

Painting kitchen doors

A new look kitchen with virtually no mess

By hand painting the kitchen cabinet doors, having the worktops resurfaced and utilising the existing handles, not only did the client save a small fortune in replacements costs but all the work was carried out with very little disruption and very little mess.
