Hand Painted Kitchen in Kirk Ireton, Derbyshire

This previously hand painted kitchen is placed in Churchside House, a lovely old period property set in the village of Kirk Ireton, in the beautiful Derbyshire Countryside not far from Carsington Water. The client contacted me after looking at my profile on the Traditional Painter website with a view to having it repainted; after sending me some initial photos of the layout and a count up of how many doors and draws were included, I was able to give them a good idea of cost. Besides looking for a quality paint finish to the kitchen cabinets they also wanted a complete new limestone floor and some minor alterations to the utility area, including a new Belfast sink, so pretty much a full refurb!

The client accepted my estimated cost (subject to a site visit) and we arranged a suitable time and day. They also asked if I could recommend a good floor tiler for fitting some large limestone tiles; I have work with one such chap on many a project, so ‘Geoff the tiler’ came with me on the visit to measure up and advise them on suitable products, he was given the job and works were planned with Geoff completing all the flooring before I came in to prep paint the cabinets. The tiled splash back behind the Aga would also be replaced by a full sheet of black glass. Geoff also fits wet rooms.so was more than capable of fitting this.

PREP & PAINT:

The Mirka Deros Dustless Sanding System

The Mirka Deros Dustless Sanding System

Lots of prep work was required before this kitchen was anywhere near ready for painting, so after a thorough degrease and clean down with Krud Kutter I then mask up all the surfaces Im not going to paint; worktops, flooring etc… I set to work with my Mirka Deros, this is a great it of kit that removes almost all of the dust at source, therefore your home doesn’t look like there has been some sort of nuclear fall out and my working environment is a much healthier one. The kitchen cabinets and units had been previously painted, unfortunately not very well, therefore every inch of paint work received a thorough flatting back to enable me to achieve a quality finish.

Once all the prep is done I’m ready to start applying the paint, for this particular job I’ve opted for Purdy brushes a 1.5″ and 2″ Purdy Monarch Elite these are a really good all round brush for solvent or water based paints, which I buy from online store Mypaintbrushes. Choice of paint was Tikkurila Furniture Feelings from Holman Specialist Paints an undercoat and  2 x top coats in a colour called ‘Old Chalk’. The paint I use is Scandinavian and is designed specifically for hand painted furniture, it is very durable and easy to  wipe down with its semi matt finish. I can also get this paint expertly matched to almost any colour palette of your choose.

The Client decided on new chrome knobs & hinges

The Client decided on new chrome knobs & hinges

The client wanted to give a more modern look to this country style kitchen so decided to loose the old chunky pine knobs and replace them with a nice stylish chrome one, this kitchen is going to look great!

So what did the Client Think?:

From initial enquiry and meeting to final handshake, we trusted Russ with our kitchen, our dogs and our house keys! He presented and delivered an extremely professional service in a good old down to earth style. He was always on hand to provide advice and opinion when decisions were needed from us and went out of his way to do additional research for us. The fantastic quality of the finished job is testament to the detailed grafting he put into preparation and his skill in applying the final brush strokes. Russ transformed our kitchen at a fraction of the cost of replacing it. If you’re thinking of getting a quote from him, do it! If you’re considering his quote, book him now!

Just waiting for Geoff the tiler to come and fit the glass splashback and I reckon its a job well done!

Well! The black glass splash back has finally been fitted and sets this country kitchen off a treat, complimenting the black granite work surfaces and central stove.
